Try the words.
Not just the promise.

A first practice and a way to support without fixing.

Theme 1: pause before the reply.

Begin with the gap between the trigger and the response. What tells you that you are reacting? What is a safe, nonurgent reply you can delay?

In a pair or group exercise, ask for permission before offering suggestions. The speaker can decline feedback. Use a neutral, made-up scenario when that feels better than a personal example.

“Would you like a question, a practice partner, or just space to name it?”
The first useful change can be one unsent sentence.

Practice without fixing each other.

Try a short role-play. One person makes a neutral optional request. The other gives a boundary. Switch roles only when both agree.

Feedback should describe what was clear, not diagnose why someone struggles. Ask permission before suggesting different wording. The person practicing chooses what to keep.

HELPFUL: “I understood when you would answer.” NOT HELPFUL: “You do this because you are afraid of everyone.”
Practice is support, not a personality assessment.
