What needs to stop, wait, or happen?

Separate the actions into three categories. STOP is an avoidable action that makes the situation harder. WAIT is a nonurgent decision with a return plan. NEXT is the responsibility that needs an actual step.

Check that pausing will not neglect safety, care, deadlines, or an existing commitment.

Your reset plan.

Leave the conversation with a small written plan: the first action, who owns it, when it will happen, and the boundary around the issue.

A useful plan names what would change it. It does not guarantee how another person will respond or how an unresolved outcome will unfold.

Know what you will do before deciding what it all means.
